It's a tough call for me, since it the difference between them is more of a feeling than a specific technical detail. The two shots seem to my untrained eye to differ only by the angle of the camera... the focal point still seems to be the red apple! That being said, I think that the first one feels like it emphasizes the shiny healthy parts of the fruits, while this second one, emphasizes the slowly spoiling parts.
I would vote for the second one, because it's not sometime that people try to see, and I like to see such things brought to light.

@Cy: Why, thank you! I also like the spoiling of the fruit, so perhaps I should go with the second one.
2nd picture wins it for me. As per Daniel, I'd consider a wee crop bottom frame to push your subjects a little 'closer' to the viewer.

@Duncan Galbraith: Mm, gotcha. Thanks for the tip! I was a little concerned that the table would become the middle of the picture, cutting it in half. But I'll play with it and see what I come up with.
Definitely the second one. I prefer the angle, which I think is too high in the other one. The apples 'loom' in this one, and also the lace cloth on the table seems less intrusive than the first shot.

@Kate: It's unanimous then!
I've been getting tired of the doily as well, so this is a nice break for me. Glad you like the lower angle.
